Baseball bat drop chart
Drop = length (inches) − weight (ounces). Bigger absolute drop = lighter bat for its length. Reviewed October 23, 2026.
Parent disclaimer: Charts are starting points from common manufacturer age/height tables — not a perfect fit for every kid. Confirm stamp and drop rules with your league and each tournament. We don’t give medical or swing-coach advice.
What drop means
A 30″ / −10 bat weighs about 20 oz. A 33″ / −3 BBCOR weighs about 30 oz. Lower drop numbers feel heavier.
- −13 to −12: Tee ball / youngest coach pitch
- −11 to −10: Most 8U–12U youth (−10 is the default)
- −8: Stronger 11U–13U travel
- −5: Bridge toward high school
- −3: BBCOR — required in high school / college baseball

Drop by age (quick guide)
| Age / level | Typical drop | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tee ball 4–6 | −12 to −13 | As light as you can find |
| 7–8 / 8U | −12 / −11 / −10 | Bat speed first |
| 9–10 / 10U | −10 | Default youth drop |
| 11–12 / 12U | −10 to −8 | Stronger kids step to −8 |
| 13 / early 14U | −8 to −5 | USSSA often requires −8+ |
| 14U+ / high school | −3 BBCOR | Check event — many 14U brackets now BBCOR |
Kitchen fit tests (better than the chart alone)
- Hip test (length): Stand the bat upright beside the player, barrel on the floor. The knob should reach roughly mid-hip. Up at the waist is usually too long; down at the thigh is usually too short.
- Arm / hold test (weight): Have them hold the bat straight out one-handed, parallel to the ground, for about 10 seconds. If the barrel sinks, the bat is too heavy — stay at the same length and go lighter on the drop, or shorten an inch.
- Chest / fingertip check: Knob at center of the chest, bat pointing out along an outstretched arm. Fingertips should reach the end cap comfortably.
- Between sizes? Take the shorter / lighter option. A bat they can control beats one they “grow into.”
