How to measure (hand & glove)
- Hand check: With the throwing hand, measure from the tip of the index finger down to the base of the palm (heel). That length is a rough youth “hand size” cue when comparing charts.
- Glove length (fielders): Manufacturers list size in inches — typically measured from the top of the index finger, down the palm, to the heel of the glove.
- Catcher’s / first-base mitts: Measured differently (around the mitt perimeter / specialized scale). Compare mitt-to-mitt using the maker’s youth vs adult labels, not fielder-glove inches alone.
- Fit test: Fingers should fill the stalls without swimming. The player should be able to close the glove on a baseball with reasonable effort after break-in. If they can’t squeeze it shut, it’s too stiff or too big.
- Lefty / righty: “Right-hand throw” gloves go on the left hand (and vice versa). Double-check before you open the box.
Charts below are parent buying ranges — not medical or coaching prescriptions. Brands vary; try on when you can.
Position cheat sheet
- Catcher: Dedicated mitt — deeper pocket, more protection.
- Infield: Smaller pattern for quicker transfers.
- Outfield: Larger for reach and a deeper pocket.
- Pitcher: Snug fit, often closed web to hide the grip.
