What size bat for 14U (ages ~13–14)
Short answer: most 13–14-year-olds sit at 31–32 inches, moving from −8 / −5 toward BBCOR −3 depending on league rules. Reviewed October 23, 2026.
1. The short answer
Age tables put 13–14 at 31–32″. This is the hardest equipment jump in youth baseball — don’t leap from a −10 straight to BBCOR the week before tryouts. Step through −8 and −5 when rules allow.
2. Length & drop chart for this age
| Player profile | Length | Drop | Approx. weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smaller / still on youth drops | 30–31″ | −8 | 22–23 oz |
| Average 14U travel | 31–32″ | −8 or −5 | 23–27 oz |
| Strong / early BBCOR path | 32″ | −5 or −3 | 27–29 oz |
| Tall HS-bound hitter | 32–33″ | −3 BBCOR | 29–30 oz |
Weights assume the listed drop (weight ≈ length − |drop|). Real bats can vary ~0.5–1 oz with grip and manufacturing.
Kitchen fit tests (better than the chart alone)
- Hip test (length): Stand the bat upright beside the player, barrel on the floor. The knob should reach roughly mid-hip. Up at the waist is usually too long; down at the thigh is usually too short.
- Arm / hold test (weight): Have them hold the bat straight out one-handed, parallel to the ground, for about 10 seconds. If the barrel sinks, the bat is too heavy — stay at the same length and go lighter on the drop, or shorten an inch.
- Chest / fingertip check: Knob at center of the chest, bat pointing out along an outstretched arm. Fingertips should reach the end cap comfortably.
- Between sizes? Take the shorter / lighter option. A bat they can control beats one they “grow into.”
3. Drop notes
USSSA often requires −8 or heavier at 13U and moves many 14U brackets toward BBCOR −3 (check 2026 event rules — some already require BBCOR at 14U). When you go heavier, it’s normal to drop an inch in length for a season.

4. Stamp / league check
Confirm whether weekends still allow USSSA −5/−8 or already require BBCOR. Read 13U travel guide and BBCOR / NFHS.

FAQ
- What size bat for 14U?
Typically 31–32 inches. Drop depends on league: −8/−5 youth vs BBCOR −3. - When do kids need BBCOR?
High school and most college play require BBCOR −3. Many 14U travel events are moving that way — check the bat tab. - Should length go up when drop gets heavier?
Often go down an inch when moving to a heavier drop so swing speed stays up. - Is −10 still OK at 14U?
Usually not in competitive travel — events commonly ban light drops. Confirm before you buy.
