What size bat for 8U (ages ~7–8)
Short answer for most 8U players: 26–28 inches at about −11 or −12 (sometimes −10). Size for control — not next year’s tournament flyer. Reviewed October 23, 2026.
1. The short answer
Most 8-year-olds land on a 26–28″ bat. Common drops are −12 / −11 / −10. A small first-year kid-pitch player may sit at 26″/−12; a taller second-year 8U can handle 28″/−10.
2. Length & drop chart for this age
| Player profile | Length | Drop | Approx. weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small for age / first kid-pitch | 26″ | −12 | ~14 oz |
| Average height & strength | 27″ | −11 or −12 | ~15–16 oz |
| Tall or second-year 8U | 28″ | −10 or −11 | ~17–18 oz |
| Big & strong (rare at 8U) | 29″ | −10 | ~19 oz |
Weights assume the listed drop (weight ≈ length − |drop|). Real bats can vary ~0.5–1 oz with grip and manufacturing.
Kitchen fit tests (better than the chart alone)
- Hip test (length): Stand the bat upright beside the player, barrel on the floor. The knob should reach roughly mid-hip. Up at the waist is usually too long; down at the thigh is usually too short.
- Arm / hold test (weight): Have them hold the bat straight out one-handed, parallel to the ground, for about 10 seconds. If the barrel sinks, the bat is too heavy — stay at the same length and go lighter on the drop, or shorten an inch.
- Chest / fingertip check: Knob at center of the chest, bat pointing out along an outstretched arm. Fingertips should reach the end cap comfortably.
- Between sizes? Take the shorter / lighter option. A bat they can control beats one they “grow into.”
3. Drop notes
At 8U, lighter drops (−12/−11) keep bat speed up while kids learn to time live pitching. A −10 is fine if they pass the arm test; skip −8 and BBCOR entirely.

4. Stamp / league check
Rec / Little League usually need a USA stamp (2⅝″ barrel). Travel weekends often need USSSA 1.15. They are not interchangeable — see USA vs USSSA.

FAQ
- What size bat should an 8-year-old use?
Usually 26–28 inches. Confirm with the hip and arm tests rather than age alone. - What drop for 8U?
−12 or −11 is the common starting point; −10 if they control it easily. Avoid −8/−5/−3. - Should I buy a bigger bat to grow into?
No. An oversized bat teaches late swings and shoulder drop. Buy for now; next year’s bat can be used. - USA or USSSA at 8U?
Whichever the league requires. Many families need two stamps if they play both rec and travel.
